For 2003, rumours persist of flights becoming available from Glasgow to the Middle East and Far East markets for the first time. Both Emirates and Pakistan are rumoured to be close to a deal to fly 3 weekly flights to Dubai and 2 weekly to Pakistan respectively. Air Scotland has also joined the growing number of airlines flying from the airport, with flights to Spain. With passenger figures expected to hit 15 million by 2020, a new expansion of the terminal building has just been announced. At a cost of £200 million, it is expected that this will boost capacity to 14.5 million. With 2 new hotels and the new 2000 space carport recently completed, complimenting the 3 existing hotels, Glasgow is seeing some major expansion now and over the next 10 years. It has been heavily rumoured for years that a new runway would be built, but as the current runway is not at capacity, it may be some way off before this takes place. The only obstacle currently standing in the airport's way is the proposed direct Rail Link with Glasgow City Center. However, with pressure from Politicians and local business, this may well get underway sooner rather than later. Due to slow, steady expansion over the last 4 decades, Glasgow has been able to increase its market share, profitability and profile without losing large amounts of money or expanding too quickly and becoming a victim of over-ambition.If BAA continues to manage Glasgow in this way, over the coming decades Glasgow will continue to grow with the demand of passenger numbers, staying ahead of what is required and remaining far ahead of its nearest competition. With improved transport links and an expansion of affiliate business in the area, such as cargo and import/export businesses, Glasgow Airport will not only continue to be directly and indirectly, one of the largest and most important employers in the area, but will continue to win new business for West/Central Scotland and encourage further tourism to strengthen the Scottish economy. |
