Glasgow Airport

1990 - Present

Hawker Hurricane & Supermarine Spitfire. A frequent site in the skies during the war. Spitfires were flown by 602 Squadron.
Abbotsinch Airfield was first used in its earliest years for test flying purposes by companies such as The William Beardmore Company as early as 1919. The airfield was actually the secondary airfield for the area, the main airfield being located in Renfrew. The airfield continued this status until 1932, when it came under the control of the RAF. In 1933, it was recognized that Renfrew Airport was becoming far too small to house the RAF 602 Fighter Squadron and operate as a commercial airfield, therefore the squadron partially operated from here and from Renfrew until the outbreak of the war, at which point the aircraft transferred to Perth, to help intercept enemy bombers as they approached the East Coast.
