Glasgow Airport

1990 - Present

Sabena Airlines and Canada 3000, who no longer fly due to bankrupcy due to the effects of Septermber 11th.

The year 2001 saw Glasgow set new records in its passenger numbers. The Airport handled over 7 million passengers and 89,000 air transport movements for this year. The events of September 11th did have an effect, however.

The slump in passenger numbers handled by American and Canadian carriers did affect Glasgow initially. Air Canada stopped flying from the Airport. Due to the company going into receivership, Canada 3000 ceased all flights. This effect on Transatlantic flights was short-lived though. In 2002 season, Continental announced that not only would it continue its daily service from Glasgow, but it would upgrade the service to larger aircraft. American Airlines decided to return to its summer schedule after fears that it would stop flights to Glasgow permanently. Air Canada also returned to a summer schedule. Also, the routes served by Canada 3000 have now been taken over by Air Tours and JMC. Icelandair also reverted back to daily services beginning in the 2002 summer season.

The airport also lost Sabena due to the company collapsing after September 11th, however a large expansion by British carriers EasyJet and Go (who have now merged), has made up for any shortfall. Routes continue to increase, despite air travel recession in the wake of this tragedy, with many airlines who use the airport adding further flights and routes in the 2003 season, with Monarch adding a short run, limited service from Glasgow direct to Cuba, for the first time.
